Finger Independance

Here is an interesting little exercise that will promote finger independance and dexterity. These things, together with economy of motion, are the foundation of great guitar playing and technique.

At first glace, this exercise looks very simple- its just one note- but it's appearance is deceptive. You see, you chose one note on the guitar (on one fret) and then play it to a metronome (sounds easy, right?), the trick is (and this is where it gets fun) you play the note with alternate fingers on your fretting hand. For example:

finger dexterity exercise

Here we have selected a G on the high E string. Now, the standard way to play this note would be with your first finger on your fretting hand, but try this: the first time you play it, use your first finger to fret it, then use your second finger, then your third, then your fourth (I.E. fingers 1, 2, 3, 4). Not as easy as it sounds, especially when you get it up to faster speeds.

This exercise if very similar to picking exercise one, in that you use all four fingers in any order- it's just that with this exercise, the note you are fretting stays the same for each finger.
