"Pinky" Finger Strength

Many Guitarists have trouble with the co-ordination and strength of their 3rd and 4th fingers. If you find yourself in this situation, fear not! I've come up with some exercises to help you out.

Starting with this one. The fingering underneath refers to your fretting hand fingers, and the rhythm is two notes per beat (or metronome click).

pinky independance exercise

As you can see, this exercise has been designed to work on our third and fourth fingers. These two fingers share a tendon in your arm, so this exercise forces you to use the muscles in your hand to separate the movement. The muscle is located right between the two fingers, and is responsible for moving the fingers apart and back together.

As always, start this exercise off slowly and to a metronome before gradually speeding it up.
